How to disassemble Synology NAS DS213+ with pictures

Synology NAS DS213+
Please excuse the quality of the pictures in these articles! I don't have a real camera and I'm just using my potato-phone. This is a pretty detailed disassembly instruction though. You probably won't need to clean this thing too frequently, but I'd clean out the dust at least once a year.

 1) Take out all the HDDs and the front panel. Unscrew 5 screws on the back side of the device. 4 of them are holding the cooler, and there is one more, just a bit lower, on the right side under the cooler.

2) Clips. There are two big goddamn clips. holding the case side. I must say - I hate clips. I'm always afraid to break something, especially if the thing I'm disassembling isn't my own. Put a screwdriver between the case and that metal bar and apply a little bit of pressure, then push this case part down. It should slide easily.

3) Once the bigger side of the case is out of the way, you can proceed with unscrewing every single screw you see!

4) At this point, you can unplug and take out the coolder if you haven't done it earlier. The funny thing is, there are two cooler outputs on the main board, which potentially leaves you with some modding options... (:
Now you just have to unscew 4 more screws holding the board itself. Then, you may take out the board.

5) Done! You can now clean everything and assemble it all back when you're done.

  3. Thanks for your valuable information, I was needing to remove the dust from a DS214play and was wondering where to start. But actually, after assembling things back together I realized that you don`t need to remove any screw before going for the clip release part (step 2).

    Regards!

  8. Thanks for these instructions. I was wondering how to open the NAS without breaking it after having removed the 5 first screws.
This way I have been able to disassemble it to fully clean it.
Nevertheless, it didn't solve my too high temperature of HDD. At least it allows me to rule out this potential reason.
